At Haly Health and Skin Medical Centre, we choose to use Botox® which is a brand of botulinum toxin A.

Also known as anti-wrinkle injections, Botulinum toxin type A is given by intramuscular (IM) injection to weaken muscles in the face and lessen the appearance of established lines associated with facial expressions. The toxin temporarily relaxes the underlying muscle and allows the skin to flatten out. This relaxes the muscles that cause unwanted lines and wrinkles & reduces their appearance by disabling the muscles movement to weaken it’s activity.

These non-surgical micro injections take about 15 mins to perform. Botulinum toxin type A can dramatically reduce dynamic wrinkles around the forehead, frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows), crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes) and smokers lines (wrinkles around the mouth). This treatment is effective with a safety record spanning 20 years.

Botulinum toxin type A can also be injected into the skin to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis) and can also be used for a wide variety of other conditions, including migraines and teeth grinding.

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections are a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles creating an improved cosmetic appearance. The active ingredient is a muscle relaxant obtained from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and is manufactured in sterile laboratory conditions. Muscle relaxing injections is a prescription only medicine.
Botulinum muscle relaxing injections bind to nerve endings and prevent the release of chemical transmitters that activate muscles. This way, the natural, purified protein relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles.

How does anti-wrinkle injections work?

Botulinum Toxin Type A targets one of the underlying causes of lines and wrinkles; the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Your Doctor will inject these muscles with Botox® to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your lines and softening of your wrinkles.

How long does it take anti-wrinkle injections to work?

Results are usually seen after 4 days, however may take up to 10 days for the full effect to become apparent.

What does treatment with anti-wrinkle injections involve?

The first step is to have a consultation with our experienced Doctor & Skin Health Therapist. They will evaluate whether anti-wrinkle injections are appropriate for you, discuss the expected outcome, answer any questions you may have and provide you with a quote.
Anti-wrinkle injections are a non-surgical treatment for wrinkles. A small amount of substance is injected into the selected facial muscles with a very fine needle. Discomfort from injections is minimal and brief and comparable to an ant bite. Ice application or anaesthetic cream can be applied ½ hour prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort however, most patients find this to be unnecessary.
Slight redness at the injection site is frequently seen, but this usually fades within a few hours. Mineral makeup, if desired, can be worn after the anti-wrinkle injection procedure. Bruising is rare but can occur. It usually fades in 35 days.

How long does anti-wrinkle injections last?

Anti-wrinkle injections last, on average, 34 months in most patients. With repeat anti-wrinkle injections the effect tends to last longer as muscles weaken over time. After three to four months the nerve endings usually grow new connections to the muscles and the effect wears off. The injections are typically repeated about between 2 4 times a year or as directed by your Doctor.

Is anti-wrinkle injections safe?

Anti-wrinkle injections are safe, with a track record of over 20 years. In fact the same proteins used in anti-wrinkle injections are commonly used in much higher doses to treat children with cerebral palsy to reduce muscle spasms and lazy eye syndrome.

Botox® is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries. Botox® has a record of experience that aesthetic specialists know and trust. And, the safety and efficacy of Botox® have been evaluated in both Allergan sponsored clinical trials as well as in 417 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.

Botox® contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Formulations, potency, and approved doses vary among botulinum toxin products, which means that one product cannot take the place of another. Those are a few reasons why there is no such thing as a “generic” form of Botox®. There have been no studies to support that other products are Unit-to-Unit equivalent to Botox®.

Do men receive anti-wrinkle injections?

Yes. Botox® has also been clinically evaluated in male patients. In clinical studies for moderate to severe frown lines, 17.5% of patients treated with Botox® were men. In the clinical studies for moderate to severe crow’s feet, male patients comprised approximately 10% of patients treated with Botox®. The number of cosmetic procedures for men (in the U.S.) increased by 273% from 1997 to 2014.
