As our skin ages, the skin gradually loses its stretch elements (collagen and elastin) and its volume (hyaluronic acid and fat pads). Fillers can be helpful for wrinkles and creases in the face. They are a safe, non-surgical and effective method of lifting, rejuvenating and shaping the face. Dermal fillers are used to help reverse the changes associated with aging.

When dermal fillers or gels are injected under the surface of the skin, your own framework is strengthened and becomes more plumped. Dermal fillers also act to stimulate the body to produce collagen. Three to six weeks post-treatment the area injected slowly builds up collagen, gains more volume and unwanted lines and wrinkles gradually diminish as the skin thickens.

If you would like to restore the fullness and softness of your face, or just tweak its shape without surgery, then dermal fillers are for you. Rather than just smoothing or tightening skin, an injectable filler aims to change the facial profile to a more youthful one. The injection of dermal fillers under the skin can fill in deep folds, such as nasolabial folds & marionette lines on the side of the mouth, create fuller lips and pad out hollow cheeks and eyes. The standard filler used in our clinic is the hyaluronic acid based Juvéderm® Collection.

What is Juvéderm®?

Juvéderm® is the #1 selling collection of hyaluronic acid fillers in the US. Each product in the Juvéderm® collection of fillers adds volume to a different area of the face – without surgery. All Juvéderm® fillers are a smooth, crystal-clear gel that are administered by injection. Dermal fillers are used to fill or replace lost volume due to the reduction in skin collagen and elastin. Fillers provide an immediate dose of collagen and ground substance, instantly filling hollows, furrows, wrinkles and lines.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

The Juvéderm® collection of fillers is made from hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a natural substance in the skin that delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture and softness, and adds volume. Each product in the Juvéderm® collection of fillers is made from a modified form of HA.

Where is Juvéderm® used?

Different formulations are approved to either lift cheeks, smooth parentheses lines and depressions in the skin, smooth vertical lip lines or plump the lips. The results are subtle and long lasting.

What is the consultation like?

Our aesthetic healthcare provider will take your medical history and provide a facial analysis. Be prepared to discuss your aesthetic areas of concern. This is not a surgical treatment. During the consultation, we will discuss and advise on how fillers may benefit you, including what filler to use, what area to treat, and most importantly discuss the expected outcome, duration of results and costs.

What does the procedure involve and what should I expect?

Actual treatment with Juvéderm® injectable gels can take between 15 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on which area of your face is being treated. Dermal filler procedures involve a series of fine injections to the treatment area.

Juvéderm®  XC dermal fillers contain lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during treatment. If you’re still concerned about treatment discomfort, your aesthetic specialist may offer additional anaesthetic options for you.

What will I look like after the treatment?

Immediately after the procedure, you can expect slight redness and swelling; this is absolutely normal. This inconvenience is temporary and settles within a day or two. Light make up may be applied if desired. The majority of patients feel comfortable enough to resume their work and normal activities after treatment. Bruising may develop a day or two after fillers, but will settle over 3 – 5 days.

Does it hurt?

Juvéderm® injectable gels labelled with “XC” contain pain-reducing lidocaine to help manage pain or discomfort during the injection. You may also ask us about a topical numbing cream or ice to help further minimize discomfort.

When will I see results?

You will see results immediately. As the dermal fillers absorb moisture over 48 hours, the result will be further emphasised.

How long do results last?

Results may last 1 – 2 years, with optimal correction and depending on the formula used. The longevity of fillers will depend on the areas treated and the type of fillers used. On average, they last 12 – 18 months, however there is an individual variation in the longevity of fillers in different people based on their metabolic rate.

What areas can be treated?

Areas that can be treated are; forehead volume, frown lines, hollow temples, under eye hollows (tear trough), upper cheek volume, smile lines, vertical lip lines, lip volume, lines around mouth, chin and jawline volume, youthful contouring, fine lines, creases and wrinkles, acne scars and chicken pox scars

What is the average treatment cost?

The cost not only includes the price of the product, but more importantly, the skill and expertise of of our aesthetic healthcare professional who is administering your treatment. Our aesthetic specialist is licensed and trained and has experience treating patients with the Juvéderm® Collection.

As per the advise of Juvéderm®, be wary of discount products or “cheap” Juvéderm® Collection treatments —if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It is more important to find an experienced specialist who will take the time to understand your treatment goals and develop a treatment plan that is right for you.

Are there any reasons why I shouldn’t receive Juvéderm® injectable gel fillers?

Do not receive Juvéderm® injectable gel fillers if you have a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), or if you are allergic to lidocaine or the proteins (Gram-positive bacterial proteins) used to make hyaluronic acid (HA) in Juvéderm®injectable gel fillers.

Can dermal fillers be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely! Fillers are only one arm of the rejuvenation process. Fillers are frequently combined with muscle relaxing injections, which relax the underlying muscles. Balance is the key to natural facial rejuvenation. Apart from treating lost volume, the use of laser treatments, sublative skin resurfacing, chemical peels, microdermabrasion & oxygen facials can improve skin texture, tone and clarity.

What are possible side effects?

The most commonly reported side effects with Juvéderm® injectable gels included injection-site redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, discoloration, and itching. For Juvéderm® VOLBELLA® XC, dryness was also reported. For Juvéderm® VOLUMA® XC, most side effects were moderate and lasted 2 – 4 weeks. For Juvéderm® Ultra XC injectable gels, most side effects were mild or moderate and lasted 14 days or less. For Juvéderm® VOLBELLA® XC, most side effects were mild or moderate and lasted 30 days or less.

One of the risks with using these products is unintentional injection into a blood vessel, and while rare, the complications can be serious and may be permanent. These complications, which have been reported for facial injections, can include vision abnormalities, blindness, stroke, temporary scabs, or permanent scarring. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.

Juvéderm® is available by prescription only.
